Big donation to life-savers

A team of life-savers have been given a huge financial boost thanks to local shoppers.
Emsworth Community Responders are celebrating after receiving a £4,800 donation.

The money was raised by the local Southern Co-operative Foundation after customers voted to pick a worthy cause.

A scheme was set up so that out of every pound spent with a Community Support Card Scheme, three pence would be donated.

After a year of hard work the shop revealed its staggering amount which has now been handed over.

The responders are still new in Emsworth and will be celebrating their first birthday on July 28.

They are usually the first to be sent out on emergency calls and need to use quick thinking to save lives.

Some of the cash has already been spent on a defibrillator machine, but the team is yet to decide what is the best way to spend the rest.

Janet Baradell, chairwoman of Emsworth Community Responders, said: 'It was a fantastic amount to be given. We cannot thank the store and their customers enough.

'To come out
top of a vote of worthy causes shows people know who we are and respect what we do.

'But we still need more awareness and volunteers to come forward.

'At the moment we have a team in Emsworth of 23 but could always do with more.

'It is a great way to help the community and full training will be given.'

The Southern Co-op store will now hold another vote to see what cause they will be supporting in the coming year.

Mike Tiller from the company said: 'The evening went very well.

'The reason we choose the Emsworth Community Responders was after our customers nominated the organisation and we were delighted at their choice. The scheme worked well and we were amazed at the final figure raised.'
